Biograpghy

Thought I might write something about me. How I can came to have multisport in my life and why it become my hobby.

I’ll start in my early 20’s. In my last year of study at Lincoln (Studying Parks Recreation and tourism management, Majored in Sport Management, yes I must have been slightly sporty then) I got glandular fever. This lead to several years of depression and overweightness. I became extremely withdrawn and I had very little confidence in socially. I remember once during this period, my um saying I lacked self confidence. This shocked me at the time and I scoffed at her, I was plenty confident in myself. Now thinking back, it wasn’t my “self” confidence, it was my “social” confidence that was the problem. I have always been shy, and not great converser, but these years it became more pronounced.

I had changed my vocation focus to computers, I was fat and unfit (not really the sort of person that you would want in a sport management role). So I got a degree in Information Communcation Technology. If you are using a computer all day, you don’t need to talk to anyone. When I finally obtained my first “proper” job is when my life started to turn around. Going to work each increased my confidence, and I had finally hit rock bottom with my weight, and decided to pull myself out of it. So I started my walking, and following the weight watchers guides to what to eat. Where I was working was opposite a gym, and as I was actually earning some proper money, I joined up, and over the next year or so I got fit and lost 20Kg.

I got bored with the gym and the constant focus on how much weight I had lost this week, or the next, so I decided I needed a goal. A colleague of mine had suggested the contours Tri series the previous year, It was all sold out, so I decided to do the Special K triathlon. My sister is a cyclist and she had done some
triathlons in her early years, maybe this also made me decide to do it, I don’t really know. That was the start of my “athlete” career.

For that very first triathlon my goal was to be able to finish the entire 3K run without walking (This was very prominent in my mind for this year’s coast to coast, where one of main issues for me before the coast to coast was how fast could I run the first 3K so I could get a decent bunch on the bike. It was just the start of the journey, whereas 3yrs earlier contemplating finishing 3K was a huge acheivement).

Each year after it my goals started getting bigger, from to do a olympic distance Triathlon to do the Coast to Coast.

What else this has done for me is give me some of the greatest friends. And though I still do not like being in strange social settings, I have a growing confidence in my self to handle these situtaions.
